The Barista and the Rich Man

He's old, she's young, he's well off with adult kids, she is a single mother of 3. Yesterday he went with her to apply for food stamps. I am so glad that my friend is opening the eyes of this 50something friend. She works hard and like she said she is "the face of poverty stricken America" I love to see this breaking down of barriers between social classes. She has gained insight into his life as well, and both have turned out less judgmental of the other "kind" of person. Another eyeopener? Yesterday my husband brought me the baby to nurse while I was working. He sat in the car for a few minutes in shock to see me filling up my arms and working my way through my second cord of wood. Later he told me "You don't see this in my country, I was thinking 'I need to stop her and do it instead, but she's working, but how can I let her do this?' " And the great reward was that after all this arguing for the last year about what a woman "should" be, he made a few references to me being a "real" woman last night while he was giving me a massage Maybe there is hope for us with regard to our differences in gender expectations. I wear a skirt occassionally, and he tells me I look beautiful in pants occasionally. Ahhhh, compromise. It is the only thing that makes marriage last.

The Graduate and the Immigrant

Happy Graduation to my girl, Danielle. Moving on to grad school, I will miss her. Hopefully we can play tennis and get together for dinner/kayaking this summer. We had a good time at her party. Tarek learned what hoola-hoops are, he had never heard of horse shoes or frisby or jumping rope. Oh, and whiffle ball.
It's so wierd to think that he has been here for almost 1 whole year. I never would have guessed a year ago today that I would have a 2 month old and that we would have been through all this stuff. It was supposed to be perfect, we were gonna live happily every after. Maybe we still may, but geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez we really have been through a lot, and so has our family. Our love is still perfect and amazing, and he still gives me that weightless feeling when I'm in his arms, so all is not lost. Besides, our perfect little baby is proof of or unbreakable bond. Immigrants!!!! Ughpffff. At least it is never boring.
